Historic Augill Castle Hotel and Wedding Venue Up for Sale

by Evelyn

KIRKBY STEPHEN, CUMBRIA – Augill Castle, a neo-Gothic hotel and wedding venue nestled in the scenic Eden Valley, has been placed on the market with a freehold asking price of £1.75 million. With a rich history dating back over 200 years, the property is renowned for hosting notable figures, including Queen Victoria.

Constructed in the early 1800s, Augill Castle boasts 14 boutique-style guest rooms, a bar and restaurant, and a variety of grand rooms, such as a library, drawing room, and orangery. The building retains many historic features, including a prominent tower, a grand staircase, and original stone fireplaces.

Christie & Co, a specialist business property advisor, has been appointed to manage the sale. The castle is located just north of the traditional market town of Kirkby Stephen, in the heart of Cumbria’s Eden Valley.

Wendy and Simon Bennett purchased Augill Castle in 1997, and shortly after, embarked on a comprehensive renovation project to restore the property to its former glory. Over the years, Augill Castle has become a popular venue for weddings, events, and private hire.

Wendy Bennett shared her thoughts on the decision to sell: “Some of our guests already know we are selling, and to those for whom this is a surprise, this is a good thing. We ‘had a dream’ to rescue this glorious Victorian building, create a unique place to raise a family, and share that journey with guests. And that’s what we have done for almost 30 years.”

She reflected on the property’s evolution, saying, “When we arrived, fresh-faced, in 1997, we took custody of the main castle and the grounds, which included seven lovely neighbours in coach houses, gatehouse cottages, and the orangery. We all shared the drive, the views, and several cups of tea. As they retired, we gradually put the estate back together to create the venue we have now.”

After nearly three decades, Wendy emphasized that it was time for the next chapter: “Two children, a menagerie of animals, and Simon’s sad passing have made us realize that it’s time to pass the mantle to someone else.”

Graham Wilkinson, an agent at Christie & Co, expressed his enthusiasm for the sale, stating, “We are delighted that Wendy and Simon asked us to find a new owner for Augill Castle. It’s a significant property in a stunning location, offering a unique opportunity to create the business and lifestyle a new owner desires within this historic building.”

Augill Castle presents a range of potential uses, from a country house hotel and wedding venue to a private residential estate, offering buyers flexibility and opportunity in one of Cumbria’s most desirable locations.
