For the first time in the city of York, couples seeking an environmentally-friendly wedding experience will have the opportunity to explore sustainable options at the upcoming Sustainable Wedding Fair. Organized by local entrepreneurs Lucie Pope and Ruth Richards, the event will showcase a selection of some of York’s finest eco-conscious wedding suppliers.
Taking place at the charming Tea by the Lock venue in Naburn, the fair will highlight a variety of local businesses that prioritize sustainability in their services and products. Lucie Pope, the founder of Into the Hedgerow, a business known for its handmade dried floral accessories, and Ruth Richards, owner of Tea by the Lock, were inspired to create the fair as a platform for couples looking to make more ethical choices while planning their weddings.
“I grew up surrounded by nature, with my mother running a wildlife rescue that cared for everything from hedgehogs to birds,” Lucie shares. “This instilled in me a deep passion for eco-conscious living, which I wanted to bring into my business. Ruth and I were also motivated to create this wedding fair to showcase the Naburn Banqueting Hall’s plant-based ethos and encourage others to make more sustainable wedding decisions.”
According to a recent study by The Sustainable Wedding Alliance, 98% of couples consider sustainability an essential factor in wedding planning. Lucie and Ruth hope the fair will inspire others to reflect on how they can minimize their environmental impact when it comes to their big day.
The fair will feature a diverse array of local suppliers committed to eco-friendly practices. Among the vendors are Rachael Bowers, a Humanist Wedding Celebrant; Charlotte Hubbard, a Vegan and Cruelty-Free Makeup & Hair Artist; and Hannah Gibbons, a traditional calligraphy artist. Additionally, there will be a local musician, a plant-based wedding cake vendor, and a vintage crockery hire service.
“I’m thrilled to bring together so many wonderful local businesses that align with our vision of a more sustainable wedding industry,” Lucie adds. “We want to show couples that being planet-friendly on your wedding day doesn’t mean compromising on style or joy.”
The Sustainable Wedding Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at Tea by the Lock in Naburn. Admission is free, and refreshments will be available throughout the day, making it an enjoyable and informative event for all couples interested in sustainable wedding planning.
